Every once in awhile, I think of my favorite “…the fuck did you just say?” phraseology, which is from Homer’s Iliad, proving we have never, ever changed as a species, only become less fancily inclined.

“What nonsense has escaped the barrier of your teeth now?”

@Catvalente amazing!

Emily Wilson's translation is less "punchy"

What words have now escaped out of your mouth and past your fence of teeth?

My wording is actually my own translation ;)

I like mine, obviously.

Loeb has “what a word” instead of nonsense but epos also has the connotation of a silly song or babble of an oracle so I went with nonsense, which I also thought sounded swell in English meter

@Catvalente oh, of course you speak ancient Greek, multi-talented as you are!

and yes, the meter is on point

my degree is in Classics! That’s how I came across the line, and that was my translation back in the time known as the day

Do you have the original quote for me, please?

@g7s @Catvalente I reckon that would be this quote:

> ποῖόν σε ἔπος φύγεν ἕρκος ὀδόντων

I associate the phrase with Odyssey book 1 verse 45. But it pops up more than once.
