OK, so potentially it was a famous tree, but does that justify four years? Think about it, for cutting a tree down in the middle of nowhere.

no, it's fucking nuts.

@basil @dick_turpin Annoying that we have to pay the costs for these divs to be in prison. I鈥檇 have preferred to see them doing very visible community service.

@jamie @dick_turpin Yeah, I was absolutely furious and fucking gutted about it, it's a real shame.

A vehement reaction to acts of cultural vandalism is common, it's a very particular sense of collective loss.

But everyone needs to give their heads a wobble. If someone wanted to build a road through there they'd have done it without breaking stride.

But now that sitting in a road gets you 10 years and painting planes red makes you a terrorist.... maybe they got off lightly 馃槄

That's a bit much - especially it wasn't for profit; but one way to think is the number of people the act pissed off; probably way more than would be annoyed by a nice tree in a small neighbourhood - but also, you have to punish something like that harshly to stop people actually doing it again.

I think two years and 12 months community service would have been sufficient.
