"Garbage in, garbage out". I was told this again and again and again while I, a business end-user, was being introduced to computers, databases, spreadsheets etc, by IT people back in the 1980s. It was a drum beat, the mantra, an article of faith. Yet it seems almost entirely absent from discussions on AI, LLMs and the rest.

When did this fall out of common knowledge, I wonder? Genuine question.

Just some random (provocative) thoughts:

Our garbage is better than your garbage?

When it's yours, it's garbage; when it's ours, it's training data?

Small and understandable: Let’s critique! Large and overwhelming: This is fine. (A similar pattern exists in code reviews.)

The mid-1800s era physician Semmelweis was ostracized by his peers for arguing in favor of handwashing in medical settings because doctors did not believe that gentlemen like themselves could harm their patients by touching them.

I imagine the rejection of GIGO on the grounds that the pure products of techbros’ hands - their algorithms - cannot be corrupted by outside forces is based on this same kind of self-serving magical thinking.

AI's are just Cat Farts.

Because: "ChatGPT" sounds like "Chat j'ai pété," which translates to "Cat, I farted."

"AI" is genuinely different in that even computer scientists don't understand how it works. If you don't believe me, get one (like me) to try to explain it.

So it's mysterious which makes it scary and an irresistible target for investors.

Some time around/after 2015, I'd say... it was certainly emphasised to me in Secondary School, not to trust user input to be valid... Idk if it just wasn't emphasized to the same degree to my peers... :neocat_laugh_sweat:

Most technical people I know still say it. Especially about AI.

It's the corporate drones, the billionaire leeches, and the infinite growth at all cost "visionaries" (lunatics) that keep pushing that narrative.
