I guess the curse of Sourceforge comes for us all, eventually

I wish we would have figured out a workable self-hosting solution—or even better an actually-distributed VCS—instead of everyone just switching to The Next Popular Platform so we could have it happen all over again.

As far as I am concerned self-hosting and code backup are mutually exclusive goals

@mcc @tedmielczarek Hosting and backup should not be (cannot be) bundled services. "It's not a backup if..." applies here.

@dalias @tedmielczarek Putting it a different way, I believe self-hosting is bad for code preservation.

@mcc @tedmielczarek Regardless of whether you're self-hosting or trusting some platform to host your source, you need both backups (private, meeting your needs when your infrastructure fails) and archival (public, meeting community/society needs when you fail).
