list of gripes (some mastoweb only, I'm sure)
1/
threads:
- can just break sometimes
- I can sometimes see a reply to someone but not the OP toot itself, and it's not for blocking/defederation issues, probably OP just wasn't fetched?
- threaded discussions are very disorganized compared to e.g. twitter (probably mastoweb has no concept of nesting deeper than one)

2/
security model: there is a "private mention" function but it's not private! If you @ someone else -let's say you want to tell your @\friend about @\abusive_person - the latter gets the toot as well! On a technical level this """makes sense""" but it's a UI disaster, and the entire model really needs rethinking.

3/
media:
- my account page has a media tab, but the icons there only show the media itself, not the toot it came from. Pretty useless
- media from other instances often isn't fetched, and I can't force a fetch by viewing a toot. The former is understandable, cache eviction is necessary, but the latter? Bleh.

4/
migrating to another instance:
omg. The go-to guide is a quite long article full of potential corner cases, and the migration itself is tedious. It should be a one click thing. Also you can't migrate old toots, this is some bullshit. I dare say, the typical migration use case is "my current instance shuts down". Telling ppl they'll just lose their old posts then is kinda unacceptable.

search, discovery
- as of 2024-10 you can't search your favorites, only all of posts& favs&bookmarks - https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21352
- mastoweb (potentially others as well) apparently has no "posts only" view, if I want to to find an old post in a boost-heavy timeline that's a lot of scrolling
