I think the 2030s are gonna be really weird.
“What up biochem fam, so great to see you guys, today we are back at it again with another video, this one’s about making your own mRNA SARS-nCoV-2029 vaccine precursors with a Bambu Lab Crispy CRISPR kit. As you all know my university research program was shut down by ICE last month which is why we are in this undisclosed location, and that is why it’s so important for you to hit like, subscribe, smash that bell, and sign up for our Patreon”
Given the amount of money that China and the EU are putting up to attract dejected US scientists, I would not worry - they will find a new home and a well paid job outside of the US.
Well, that is, unless you live in the US - then I would probably worry, but not about the scientists...
A) I do live in the US, so, yes, that's why I'm worried, and
B) I think that one of the things that we are learning with the consequences of the collapse of USAID et. al. is that those of us critical of the American empire, both from within and without, are finding out that in addition to the US's various crimes, it was also a crucial pillar holding up a tremendous amount of modern civilization's infrastructure. A _lot_ of people will be harmed by its collapse.
@glyph @madsenandersc >> those of us critical of the American empire, both from within and without, are finding out that in addition to the US's various crimes, it was also a crucial pillar holding up a tremendous amount of modern civilization's infrastructure.
We tried to tell y’all and now it’s Surprised Pikachu Face time, I guess.
A) Rightfully so, I'm afraid. The future looks really grim if your field of science is related to one or more words that can send DOGE on a rampage. This will get a lot worse before it gets better.
B) I don't disagree entirely, but seen from the outside, at lot of the help from the USAID was tied very tightly to a political agenda, something that also had harmful consequnces for people.
That being said, there is no doubt that the missing humanitarian aid will have some horrible consequences, and I really hope that the EU will get off of their collective asses and pick up the slack as fast as possible.
while I reserve most of my ire for the authoritarian fascists, the last couple of years have definitely left a sour taste in my mouth re: EU leadership, both on nonsense like chat control and on the sort of vague paternalistic condescension of EU leaders towards all the rakes the US is stepping on, without just, as you say, getting off their asses and just DOING something.
