A community garden plot opened up!!!

AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO PLANT!?!?!

We don't have too many of these in our town, so they're highly sought after. I placed myself on the waiting list a while back and it looks like one just opened up.

They're free to use, but you have to actively use and maintain it. It looks like this one wasn't maintained and defaulted back to the community.

I love how the organizers are willing to assist community members!

I'll be heading out this week and taking a look at it. I'll post pics of it and will keep updating this thread as I decide what to plant and my learning how to plant it.

I really don't know how to garden outdoors. But! Only one way to learn!

So! What should I plant so late in the season?

I'm in Northernish Virginia, USA.

My goal is food, dense nutrients. I really wanted to plant potatoes, but I'm not sure if its too late for that (I don't know though! I'll research it!). I also will see if I can set up some automation on my plot, maybe even put a camera out there to watch it remotely. I'll ask the organizers if I can do that.

Wish me luck!!!

Ok! Got a chance to visit the community garden!

The city pays for the water and the land. It's up to the garden organizers to maintain it.

It's free to use a plot so long as you actually use it.

I asked to be put on the waiting list a while back and one just came in.

Here are some pictures of the garden as a whole and some sample plots:

The garden has some community tools & toolshed and a community compost heap and a common water spigot.

They specifically said they didn't want a lot of automated or passive infrastructure built up... which suck.... but I get why.

They specifically want to see people in the garden and so ask for "hand watering" with the hose.

While not ideal for some of the things I want, it makes sense.

While I was touring the area, I ran into other people. Had a chance to talk with them. There are meetups on Saturday to discuss what each person is doing in their garden.

That builds community. And I like it.

Here is our humble plot - very overgrown.

I'll need to weed it and clean it up before planting.

We specifically received this because the person before us was unable to maintain it and just left it.

We DID find a couple leftover melons that are ready to be eaten!

I'm specifically opening this plot up to our town's burgeoning solarpunk group. So we can all maintain it if we want.

I'll post an update to this thread once we've cleaned the plot up!
