@mastodon.au was having problems so I'm here and it's time for a new

. I was a software developer in a previous life. I spent most of my time with C, C++ and Java. I'm retired now but I really miss it and would be willing to volunteer a few hours a week. I spend my free time with my family, my dog, and these days. My favorite word is cavorting. I renounced my citizenship a few years ago and live in Australia full time but still follow ().

@Red_Shirt_Dude @ferrata I'm American, living in Australia...just waiting for the ceremony to become a citizen. Why did you give up US citizenship? I've considered it, but I don't pay a ton of taxes there, so it doesn't really make sense for me, financially. Always interested in hearing why people give it up, though.

@rogersherman @ferrata Taxes were an issue for me. Even though I received a tax credit, I felt like A) I was doing taxes year round, & B) The USA was getting "the first crack" at my income. Also, conflicting laws made financial planning difficult. Did you know that the IRS doesn't allow deductions for Superannuation for example? Also, I hate

@Red_Shirt_Dude @ferrata interesting what you say about the US getting first crack - I thought Australia did, and you could then deduct taxes paid in Australia from your US taxes. Unless you work directly for a US based company?

@rogersherman @ferrata It can work the way you say. It's all a matter of timing. The US taxes word wide income.

@Red_Shirt_Dude @ferrata yeah, that's something I definitely know. Sounds like our circumstances are a bit different in that regard, though.

Would you be interested in help us get this started?
