The Hamas Charter 2017 (2)
Article 16
"Hamas affirms that its conflict is with the Zionist project not with the Jews because of their religion. Hamas does not wage a struggle against the Jews because they are Jewish but wages a struggle against the Zionists who occupy Palestine."
Hamas — a nationalist (Palestinian), faith-based (Islamic) political movement — refuses to accept Zionism — a nationalist (Israeli), faith-based (Jewish) political movement.
Interestingly, the 2017 Hamas Charter states in Article 6 that:
'The Palestinian people are one people, made up of all Palestinians, inside and outside of Palestine, irrespective of their religion, culture or political affiliation."
‘Confronting’ Zionists and their project (which apparently includes attacks such as those perpetrated on October 7, 2023) does not recognize those living in the land Hamas refers to as Palestine irrespective of their religion, culture or political affiliation. It does not recognize Zionists because of their political affiliation. And it does not then recognize Israel.
According to Hamas' own reasoning, Hamas must recognize Israel.
