I am a writer of young-adult friendship / coming-of-age books, returned Peace Corps volunteer who served in Ukraine 2001-2003, father of a former micropreemie, and a former newspaper reporter from 20 years ago. When the "alt" right became a thing in 2016, for a second I hoped it was the alt tree of newsgroups coming back (colloquially called Anarchists, Lunatics, Terrorists) but it was not to be.
